Unity driving model
For a side project i wanted to create a semi-realistic driving model that both feels believable, but also allows for some fun movement that would normally be impossible.

Tyre grip modelling is simplified but based on real-world values, same as the engine. Powercurves and gear reductions are used to emulate the engine, with gears being shifted automatically.

A simple checkpoint system is added in this preview of the model, where you can drive around a field, based on a real location.

Automatic gears
Gear shifting will automatically take place when the engine is going to deliver most power, ensuring smooth power delivery without any hassle. The tachometer UI also automatically adapts to the max RPM of the engine.

Real life engine stats
With stats based on real engines and gear ratios, the performance of cars can be copied from real life cars.

Grip-based drifting
Drifting only happens when the car loses grip, which makes turns a lot more difficult but rewarding to get right.
